Area Sales Manager Richard Buchan recently received recognition for his outstanding contribution to the Scottish Poultry Industry over a lifetime, having been presented with this year’s prestigious Howie Surgenor Cup at the Poultry Club of Scotland’s annual dinner.
Richard started his career on the family farm before moving into equipment sales. He has been a key member of the trade ever since, praised for his exceptional equipment knowledge and commitment to ensuring his customers are fully satisfied.
Richard said, “This award was a tremendous surprise and left me feeling shocked and humbled for my efforts within this great industry to be acknowledged in this way. I remember well from my many years on the committee, keeping it a secret is always a challenge, and I can honestly say I did not see this one coming!
“As always, the committee organised yet another fantastic night with outstanding food and great entertainment, which I know was appreciated by all the guests. After the formalities of the dinner, the relaxed opportunity to socialise and circulate was a wonderful way to finish the evening (especially with ‘The Cup’ cradled in my arms!).”
Looking ahead, Richard is excited for the future of the Scottish poultry industry, with automation offering plenty of opportunities to improve productivity. He concluded, “I am having lots of discussions at the moment around automation on the farm. It is possible to make the lives of farm workers easier by automating packing and palletising processes. This assists with staff retention because they are able to experience more job satisfaction. It's a great time to be working in the UK poultry sector!”
