A complete solution for modern poultry houses - we have seen a huge expansion in the roll-out of innovative air scrubbing technologies

Farms are increasingly exploring new ways to reduce their environmental impact by lowering the amount of dust, odour and ammonia in the air.

We are passionate about supporting farmers keen to develop their poultry houses by embracing new technologies to produce food successfully using modern, environmentally-friendly methods.

Case Study

Recently, we have been working with a family-run farm unit in Wales to significantly reduce emissions and create optimal air conditions in its free-range poultry houses. The farm has a range of modern steel portal framed farm buildings and reclaimed traditional buildings, housing some 80,000 birds. Newly erected air scrubbers have been designed to offer a complete solution for cleaning ammonia, odour and dust from the exhaust air of the poultry houses.

The Process of Air Scrubbing

Big Dutchman’s innovative air scrubbers tackle the problem of reducing ammonia in the air emitted from the buildings by as much as 90 per cent, which is often a legal requirement of many farm planning applications. They are very simple to set up, with the air scrubbing unit built into the back of the house. Air is pushed or drawn into it by the ventilation system, where it is washed with a mixture of water and sulphuric acid, which binds with the ammonia particles to neutralise them. The air leaving the system is therefore clean of ammonia, and the dirty water can be repurposed as fertiliser containing ammonium sulphate.

Two air scrubbers have been installed at the aforementioned farm unit in Wales. The system self-regulates, measuring the exhaust air properties around the clock. It can be built to the exact specifications of every individual farm, ready to be connected straightaway, and up and running within days.

Expansion in the UK

Our Managing Director, Adam Dye, says, “Air cleaning has really started to take off in the UK, a trend that has been popular in Europe for over a decade now. Most poultry farms in the Netherlands and Europe use this technology because it has huge potential for the environment. UK customers have started making the investment in air scrubbing because they know it is essential to have a sustainability agenda in this day and age.”
